Radon Awareness Week 2024: Get Started with Radon Testing

Welcome to Radon Awareness Week 2024! This week is all about raising awareness around radon – a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can have serious health implications if left undetected. At PropertECO, we’re committed to making sure homes, schools and workplaces are safe from radon exposure. Whether you’ve been hearing about radon for years or this is your first time coming across it, this week is the perfect time to get up-to-date on the facts, the risks and the easy steps you can take to protect yourself and your loved ones.

What exactly is radon and why is it dangerous?

Radon is a radioactive gas that comes from the breakdown of uranium in the soil, rock and water beneath us. It can seep through the ground and enter budlings through tiny cracks in the floor, walls and foundations. Radon is colourlous, odourless and tasteless, so it can only be detected through specialised testing.

Long-term exposure to high radon levels can lead to lung cancer. In fact, after smoking, radon exposure is the second leading cause of lung cancer worldwide. This makes radon awareness and testing a critical safety measure that every property owner should consider.

Getting started with radon testing

Radon testing is very straightforward, all you need to do is follow these three simple steps.

  1. Order a Radon Test Kit: Starting from £39, our radon shop has a variety of test kits that are easy to use and come with full instructions for testing radon levels in your home or workplace.
  2. Place the Kit in Your Home or Workplace: Radon testing is simple. Place the test kit in a commonly used area of your building (like a bedroom or living room) for the recommended period.
  3. Submit Your Kit and Get Results: Once the testing period is complete, return the kit via post to the lab for analysis. If your results indicate high levels of radon, don’t panic, we have a host of radon mitigation solutions

Psst…As a Radon Awareness Week special, we’re offering a £5 discount on our radon testing kits at www.radonshop.co.uk! Just use code RAW2024 to apply your discount now.* Discount valid against 3-month passive detector kits and the EcoQube and EcoBlu digital radon monitors.

Kicking off Radon Awareness Week at PropertECO

Helping others to stay informed and stay safe about the dangers of radon exposure is what we do here at PropertECO. This year’s Radon Awareness Week mission is to make it clear how easy and simple radon testing is and how it can make a huge difference.

Here’s what we’ve had planned so far:

  • Tune into the Safer Schools Podcast with our co-founder, Rebecca Coates:
    • Our co-founder, Rebecca Coates, joined the Safer Schools Podcast to highlight the hidden dangers of radon in schools across the UK. Rebecca talks about why radon testing should remain a priority and how to carry out an effective risk assessment in your school.
  • Launching the radon factsheet
    • We understand that radon isn’t the easiest of topics to understand. So, this Radon Awareness Week, we have pulled together a downloadable radon guide with all you need to know about what radon is, where it comes from, how to reduce radon levels and what your responsibilities are as an employer or homeowner. Download our factsheet here.
  • Exclusive radon test kit discount: Use code RAW2024
    • Throughout Radon Awareness Week, we’re offering a £5 discount on select radon testing kits available at radonshop.co.uk. Just use the code RAW2024 at checkout to claim your discount. Let’s make radon awareness a year-round effort

Radon Awareness Week is a great time to focus on the risks of radon exposure, but it’s something we should keep in mind all year round. Testing and mitigation can make a huge difference to your health in the long run and the more we all share and discuss radon, the safer our homes, schools and workplaces can be.
