Do I Live in a Radon Affected Area?

Though radon isn’t on everyone’s radar, it’s important to understand what it is and in which environments that it may appear.

Radon is undetectable without the correct testing methods and is a naturally occurring radioactive gas caused by the decay of small amounts of uranium that are present in the rocks and soils underneath us. It can be drawn into buildings from the ground, and accumulate unnoticed in the air that we breathe.

Because of the nature of radon, it is more likely to be prevalent in certain geographical areas of the country.

Am I in a Radon Affected Area?

Every building contains radon, but the levels are usually low and should be of no concern. However, the best way to determine if you live in a radon-affected area is to check the UK Health Security Agency Radon Map.

The official UKHSA radon map shows the likelihood of high radon levels in your area. It allows you to search by postcode and shows areas with higher radon levels (colour-coded by risk).

It could be useful to know that some areas are more prone to high radon levels than others, for example, the South west of England (Cornwall, Devon and Somerset), parts of Wales, the Peak District, and areas of Northamptonshire , tend to have higher radon levels due to local geology.

The map is available online and is interactive. Simply enter your postcode, click ‘show radon data’ and the areas of the map that are highlighted in a darker colour will indicate a greater chance of being radon affected.

Radon can be present in both commercial and residential buildings such as schools, care homes, prisons and homes. To learn more about the effects of radon exposure, visit our blog here.
