Reflecting on Radon Awareness Week 2025: Continuing the Conversation

Radon Awareness Week 2025 (3rd–9th November) saw organisations and professionals across the UK come together to shine a light on one of the country’s most overlooked environmental health risks, radon gas.

As long-standing members of the UK Radon Association (UKRA) and specialists in radon testing, diagnostics and mitigation, PropertECO were proud to play an active role in this year’s campaign, helping to share the facts, raise awareness, and call for stronger national leadership on radon safety.

A united call for government action

At the heart of this year’s campaign was the UK Radon Association’s open letter to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Rt Hon Wes Streeting MP, urging the government to take decisive steps to reduce radon exposure in homes, schools and workplaces.

The letter called for:

  • A nationwide radon communications campaign to ensure schools meet their legal testing duties.
  • Inclusion of nurseries and early years settings, which are often left out of existing radon initiatives.
  • Wider public information through health services and community outreach.

At PropertECO, we see firsthand the difference that awareness and action can make. Every year, our team works with schools, businesses, and homeowners across the country to detect and mitigate radon, creating safer and healthier indoor environments. Supporting this national call to action aligns perfectly with our mission to make radon safety simple, accessible and effective.

Invisible Gas, Visible Risk

This year’s theme, “Invisible Gas, Visible Risk”, captured the essence of the issue. Radon can’t be seen or smelled, yet it remains the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, responsible for around 1,100 deaths in the UK each year.

Despite the scale of the risk, awareness and testing remain low, particularly in workplaces and schools. The campaign highlighted how:

  • Radon levels vary greatly, even between neighbouring buildings.
  • Testing is quick, inexpensive and easy to do.
  • Mitigation systems are proven to work, reducing high levels within days.

Our engineers at PropertECO have successfully installed hundreds of mitigation systems across the UK, helping schools and workplaces comply with legislation and giving property owners peace of mind.

Spreading awareness and sharing expertise

Throughout the week, we joined the national conversation under #RadonAware, sharing facts, advice and practical guidance across social media.

We were also pleased to see the campaign gain traction in the media, with coverage in Air Quality News, the Daventry Express, Northampton Chronicle, Harborough Mail, and the Banbury Guardian, each helping to make the issue of radon more visible to the public.

As technical experts, we see Radon Awareness Week as not only an awareness building campaign, but a reminder of our shared responsibility to turn that awareness into action. Whether it’s a single detector in a family home or a mitigation system for a large school estate, every test matters.

Looking forward

Radon Awareness Week may have ended, but our work continues. At PropertECO, we remain committed to supporting the UKRA’s mission to make every building in the UK #RadonAware.

 We’ll continue:

  • Educating property owners and facility managers about their radon responsibilities.
  • Providing professional radon testing, monitoring and mitigation services nationwide.
  • Collaborating with UKRA members and public bodies to ensure radon remains a key part of environmental health policy.
