Managing Radon Risks as an Independent School

We’re delighted to have been featured in the Bursar’s Review Summer 2025 magazine (follow the link and flick to page 78 for our article). We always hope that the blogs we write are helpful and informative – and this feature is testament to our mission in raising awareness around radon, radon testing and radon mitigation.

Our Managing Director, Charles Edwards, headed up the feature that’s part of the Independent Schools’ Bursars Association (ISBA) termly magazine. Boasting a reach of 3500 people, with 1200 member schools, the Bursar’s Review aims to deep dive into the pressures, challenges and future growth of independent schools across the UK.

In the article, Charles elaborates on the steps that independent schools must take as they strive to comply with the latest regulations and set out best practice to minimise the risk of radon exposure to pupils, colleagues and members of the public.

Here are the highlights:

  • Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas formed from the decay of uranium in rocks and soil that can seep into buildings and become trapped. Exposure to high levels of radon for a prolonged period of time can lead to health issues, including lung cancer.
  • Every school must demonstrate they have considered radon in their risk assessments.
  • Schools that fail to keep pupils safe from radon can face reputational damage, financial sanctions and prosecution.
  • Ideally, radon testing should be planned for the autumn or winter term.
  • If testing in your school demonstrates a need for mitigation, act quickly to comply with the Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017

Our Work with Schools

Our work within the education sector spans independent schools, local authority-maintained schools, multi academy trusts and universities.

Here are some of our related case studies:

We have assisted many schools across the country in meeting their radon risk assessment obligations. We offer a ‘place and collect’ service alongside our radon detectors, meaning that we can ensure detectors are placed in the most appropriate locations to give reliable results.

Once testing is complete, where necessary, we will provide a radon mitigation service where our team of radon experts will be on hand to give you the advice on the steps needed to carry out effective radon mitigation.
